Yesterday was spent, getting our farrowing pens ready. We put in rubber mats on the concrete to hopefully hold some warmth. We have small areas under a heat lamp for the babies to get under, that mom can't get to. We will put down wood chips topped with straw. We have decided that we will let moms decide when to take their babies outside, but will be pushing for them to stay in the barn for at least a month. This is a challenge with the Large Black, as their instincts are to be outside. Usually we embrace that, but for babies safety, moms are going to have to stay inside and will undoubtedly be cranky! Luckily, their crankiness can be handled with some good back scratches!
I am guessing nine piglets for each of them. Wren due the 26th and Gypsy the 28th. Fingers crossed for boy piglets! Nigel has sired two very gilt heavy litters thus far, and we have a waiting list for barrows!
Other exciting Pasture Prime Farm news...the article on our farm came out in The Country Today yesterday! We are very happy with it, Danielle did a great job and got some great pictures. Yes, we did buy five copies to send West to our families, we were so excited! Last I looked, it wasn't up on their website yet, but when it comes out I will post it to my Facebook page.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
