It has been awhile since my last blog and a lot has been going on! First of all I want to introduce...Dexter! Dexter is our new addition to the farm. He will be our second boar line on the farm. He is of the Defender line. We are hopeful he will add thickness and quicker growth to our herd. So far, he is busy running from the electric fence that he is sure, follows him everywhere! He came out of quarantine and inherited a buddy which has helped immensely! His skittishness hasn't stopped him from dropping on his side for a belly-rub though!
How pretty is this pasture? This pasture was planted last year, and had one grazing rotation done. We are in the midst of planting more pastures like this one. We have been busy working up our winter sacrifice pastures and planting new. Our goal is to have all of our back pastures look like this. Front pastures get the most traffic, therefore they were planted with annual peas and oats. We are excited to see how this works. It is so fulfilling to see how much our pastures have changed in a short five years.
I just think this picture is so cool. This is our intensive, rotational grazing system. This has been a few years in the making and is coming to fruition! This is three different groups of pigs, all being contained with one strand of electric poly-wire. In the far pasture, we have our boar and two sows, and they have a woven wire border. We don't trust Nigel staying in his pasture, and deciding to check out the ladies in the next pasture! Smooth Operator that he is!
Here is to the growing season, we made it through the rough winter and happy pigs are back to doing what they do best and that is grazing!!! Welcome Spring!
I am a mother/wife/farmer/ pig belly-scratcher/banker...a wearer of many hats. Put this all together, and there are going to be trials and tribulations and best of all jubilation's! Welcome to my page!
